Emily's Pinky

I was planning on taking more pictures of Emily in her cast but only took a few.  Spencer took this one of Emily after church.
And another one with Josh.......
A friend from church brought over some cupcakes for her to make her feel better after hearing what happened.

So today was her second doctor appointment to get another cast and get the pins taken out.
(it wasn't a very happy visit!)  Spencer took her for this visit.  I knew I wouldn't be strong enough for her.  I'd be crying right along with her while those pins were pulled out.  Spencer said it was hard; the first pin came out alright but the second was a bit tougher to get out.  I'm SO glad I missed that visit!

Today my baby got her cast off and the doctor said to keep it taped after taking out the pins.
It looks great I suppose. Not that her finger ever looked really disfigured or anything
She told Spencer that she had the longest nail ever.  It was pretty gross.
We still need to be careful with it. And keep it taped up.  I'm so glad she's getting better. But of course I wish this never happened.

Our First Break

It was a normal day in the Allred home.  Kids being kids.  They were dancing to music (fun kid CDs) and I thought I'd get ready for the day.  It was noon.  The girls came down with Emily in tears.  Avery told me Jake kicked her finger.  It didn't look bad to me so I offered ice and blew it off since she calmed down.  I talked to Jake and the story was that Emily was reaching down to get a ball and Jake decided to kick the ball but got Emily's finger instead.  It was an accident.  Yes, they are too rough at times but this truly was an accident.
This is the ball that Emmy was getting.  It's larger than a softball but not very big.  Just an air filled rubber ball.
This was day 2.  We had just gotten back from the dr and saw the x-rays of her broken finger.  It was like a triangle broken right at the first joint on her right pinky.  We were sent home to wait for what the specialist thought.  Avery and Jake decided to do something for Emily so they gathered a few random items, wrote her a get well card, and put it in a little purse.  She loved it!
Finding all sorts of treasure from Jake and Avery.  If you click on this picture it should enlarge and you can see her broken pinky finger- it looks like you can see the bone but it's purplish.  It's weird! Almost freaky! (Ok Spencer just said it's probably the bone! Ewww! Poor baby!!)
She was not having a good day.  It made me sad for her.  The kids did their best to try to cheer her up.

That afternoon I was told that the "specialist" didn't specialize in hands and so he forwarded Emily's x-rays to a hand specialist.  That evening I got a call that the "hand specialist" wanted  to "re-set her finger "so she'd have to have surgery the next day.  No food or drink after midnight.   Spencer was working at the fire station so I was having a little breakdown that my little baby girl had to have surgery all from getting her finger kicked by her brother.  And he wasn't even wearing shoes!  It was unbelievable and overwhelming to me!  It was perfect though because it was Emily's turn for 1 on 1 that night ( I take turns having 1 on 1s with the kids when Spencer is at the fire station. We talk or play a game.  Just the two of us.)  Well, Emily wanted to have her nails painted.  Pink. Blue. Pink. Blue. With white glitter.
Day 3.  This is my terrible doctoring job. We had a splint and I taped her fingers together like the dr had done on our visit. This was the morning of her surgery. Before she left with Spencer.
Morning of my girls cuddling on my bed.  I think we were all nervous about what the day would bring.  She had to be there at 9:30 downtown.
We picked out an outfit and I did her hair in two braids- just the way she likes it.  The game on my phone kept her distracted from not being able to have breakfast.
Besides the sticky lint fuzz from the tape, her finger "looks" fine.  A tad swollen.  I would have NEVER thought it would have broken after what happened!
This is my baby at the hospital ready for her surgery.  When I had my surgery about a month ago they tried to call those blue caps a "party hat".  Some party, huh!?

It was good that Spencer took her (in uniform too by the way!) because I cried so much that day.  I was so nervous for her!  The kids & I kept busy getting a few gifts for her to come home to.  They used the mask with gas to put her under before hooking her up to any monitors and iv's but it was terrible, they didn't let Spencer be with her until she went down!  They wheeled her down the hall screaming & crying!!  (I would have raised all he** if I was there! The crazy Mom needs to be with her baby!)  But Spencer mentioned it to the staff and I sure hope they are more aware of how traumatizing that can be for kids!  Unfortunately, she does still remember that part which makes me very sad!
I cried seeing this picture too.  I was at the store with the kids and I was glad that it went well and she was doing alright but this picture is sooo sad.  She's still groggy from the meds.  When Spencer asked her how she was doing she looked at him, gave him a "thumbs up", and laid back down. The specialist had to use pins and wires to reset her little finger.  Break my heart!!
My baby finally home and next to me.  She had gotten sick on the way home but was struggling with having an empty tummy & feeling a bit ill and tired from the meds wearing off.  I remember how beat I felt.  Just exhausted.
She was feeling a bit better by bedtime and was a bit hungry.  It was plain & simple for the little tummy:  a little bit of applesauce and graham crackers.
1st day after surgery.  I wanted to keep Emily close so I had her camp out in my bedroom.  After doing our chores the kids couldn't stay away from her anymore.  Or maybe it was because she was watching a bunch of movies and they wanted to watch Megamind too.  I love this one with them all surrounding her.  I mean the computer.

So Emily's pinky was compared to an ice cream falling off it's cone.  The hand specialist had to put the "ice cream" back on it's cone.  She has to wear this splint that goes up her arm for a little over a week.  And since it's taken me about that long to post this....she will be getting a cast (pink of course!) in two days. The pins and wires will come out.  She'll have to have the cast on for about 4- 6 weeks.

Tie Dye

Yup, another Summer To Do List activity.... Tie Dye.  We did shirts and pillowcases.

I bought a tie dye kit.  It was much simpler than buying it all separately.  The three colors in the kit were pink, blue and lime green.  Poor Jake.  No boy colors.

(We were on our way to swim at Grandma & Grandpa's pool so that's the excuse for untidy children.) Jake wanted a graduated type shirt (darker at the top getting lighter at the bottom) but it didn't work out so well.  Emily requested a bulls eye style.  It came out really cute!  Avery did a swirl type.  I like hers too.  I did my shirt with two swirls and it looks nice.  The kids had fun and that's what matters!  oh, Josh was able to wear Jake's shirt instead and was happy!

At the Pond

So continuing on with the Summer To Do List.... Feed the Ducks.  I was able to drive but still walked funny.  Avery was in charge of the Little Man.  We brought some bread and they came.  Tons of them!
Avery.  My HUGE helper.  The second Mom while I'm still recovering.
Emily loved having ducks at her feet the second we got even somewhat close to the pond.
The kids were so excited to see a duckling all by itself.  Well, it's mother was nearby eating bread from one of the kids.
I think this was Little Man's favorite thing to do. "Raaaaa!" He'd say using wide arms running towards a big group of ducks. It was pretty funny.
Avery thought the ducks would get her toes so she stood on a rock.  They swarmed around her.  This was before the mass came.
One of the handsome mallards
This picture makes me smile.  I first see the white "Aflac" duck.  But looking closer there's the middle duck with a poof on it's head and it almost looks as if the two ducks on the right are laughing at him.
The duckling with it's Momma
I love this picture of the kids walking along the water's edge.
Another Momma duck.  This time with quite a few more ducklings.
Six to be exact.
I think this is my favorite picture but Little Man was busy elsewhere.....
swinging and singing.

Water Balloons & Homemade Ice Cream

(Warning: this is a long post with lots of pictures! Sorry!)
Knowing my surgery was coming up I tried to plan things that I could do with the kids to keep them busy, entertained, and having fun.  We made a list.  Water balloons. Definitely ON THE LIST.

There is my big man Jake armed and ready for a water balloon fight.
 The boys getting more "ammo"
Josh getting ready to throw his balloon at Emmy. You can see Jake in the back still waiting.....
Emily and Jake going at it.  You can see Jake's blue balloon in midair.
Josh just throwing his balloons for the fun of it. At the dirt.
Harley was trying to catch some of the balloons the kids were throwing.  He'd run around chasing the balloons and biting at the water as it splashed on the ground.
Jake getting Emmy in the back.  So NOT cool. Good thing she's a good sport. She loved getting wet.
Here she is getting wet while Jake squeezes a balloon over her head.
Avery was my helper.  She was passing out the balloons to the other kiddos.

Making ice cream wasn't on the list until we bought the ice cream maker from Costco.  It was on sale or else I wouldn't have mentioned it to Spencer about how fun it would be this summer for the kids. So far we've made four different flavors of ice cream in a month.  Luckily it doesn't make too much.

This was our first batch.  Cookies & Cream. It was SOOO yummy!
Some of my eager taste testers that ate a good dinner, did their after dinner chores, and had their bath.  Avery was such an amazing helper with Josh while I couldn't carry him around.
Super Jake with his super muscles
 My baby girl Emmy
Josh and his cutest smile that melts our hearts.

Our second flavor was a sherbet.  Raspberry Lemon.  It was pretty good too.
The instant the ice cream maker turns on Josh wants to watch it.  He's a great helper boy.
The first of the raspberry lemon sherbet.

We've also made fudgesicle ice cream and my favorite: "moose tracks" (vanilla ice cream with toffee and peanut butter cup pieces and fudge swirl)
